Hi all, here is how I made my vase out of oatmeal cans! As I scroll through Pinterest at night I tend to see crafts made with hemp or jute and cans to make pencil holders, etc. I thought why not make a bigger version using oatmeal cans?
I had one that was almost empty and saved it. I finally emptied another so I could finish this project, so you may need to recruit friends and family to save some if you are not eating a lot of oatmeal in your family.
Here are the supplies you’ll need:
(2) Oatmeal cans
Superglue
Scissors
Hot glue gun
1 to 2 rolls of hemp
Bag of rocks
To get started, I was going to take the paper off the can, but then thought hot glue is awesome and it will stick to the paper so no need to waste any time there.
I started gluing (you only need a very thin layer) and wrapping the hemp around the oatmeal can. You only want to line the glue half way around the can then put on your hemp and repeat. I started from the bottom and worked my way up.
This is where my lovely husband tried to be helpful and suggest a faster way….which was to put the hot glue all over the can and start wrapping……..clearly he has never hot glued anything, or he would know it dries quickly, bless him. Continuing on….
Once you have the one can wrapped this is where I super glued the cans, you can do this before you start, but I hadn’t emptied my second can when I started (you also need to cut out the bottom of the top can). I used Gorilla brand super glue because I love all Gorilla Glue products!
I let that dry and finished wrapping my can. Once I was done, I decided to line the inside of the top can to make it look a little more finished.
I put a bag of dollar store rocks in the bottom to help with weight, added some sticks, and viola! Here is the finished vase, what do you think?
